Raising Your Competitive Player
Raising a GSA Youth Athlete is part coaching, cheerleading, and 100% adventure. Whether you are squeezing in dinner on the go, or the constant laundry, you are doing a great job...trust us. Here are some tips to help you guide and support your GSA athlete, keep your sanity, and enjoy the ride:
Celebrate the EFFORT, not just the Wins; work rate, effort, bravery, embracing the physical aspects, great pass, shot, tackle, and risks.
Be their Fan, Not their Coach; the ride home is for praising effort, positivity, and milkshakes, not film review. Say it with me, "I love to watch you play!"
Let them Own their Journey; it's their game, failure is critical to learning. They will figure it out and build confidence flexing their independence. Be steady support and only listen; don't try to solve...as this steals an opportunity to learn and build confidence.
Fuel Their Passion (and Bodies); Hydration, snacks, and rest! You got this! Please avoid stimulant drinks, overly processed food, and high sugar.
It Should Be Fun: it should be something they love, not something they dread. It's ok to be competitive...actually it's expected. Part of the fun is competing, being the aggressor, and when it's done...we laugh, crack jokes, and give pats on the back.
Enjoy the Journey; it goes by FAST! Believe it or not, you will miss the cold mornings, rainy days, the never ending drives to training and games. As a matter of fact, it's a magical time where you have a captive audience with your child(ren). Take it all in, because it is special.
